- Step1
Check your computers to see if they already have wireless capabilities onboard. Many new models do, but older computers may not. Purchase one wireless router and a wireless network adapter for each computer that is not already wireless capable from a reputable store. You can buy an adapter that plugs into the back of the computer with a USB cable or a card that you install inside the computer. You can simplify the installation, by choosing a router and adapters from the same company.
- Step2
Install the wireless adapters onto the computers, following the instruction in the package.
- Step3
Unplug your modem from the wall and disconnect your computer from the modem. Connect the wireless router to the modem, so that the modem is between the router and your main internet source.
- Step4
Turn the modem on and give it some time to connect to the internet. Once the modem is connected, turn on your wireless router.
- Step5
Connect your computer to the modem using the network cable that came with it. Follow the directions that came with your router to configure the settings. You will need to choose a name, or SSID, and administrator password for your network. Make sure you enable network security so that people outside of your home can't get into your network.
- Step6
Unplug your computer from the router. Now you can connect other computers, printers and wireless enabled devices to the network. You can connect most computers by turning them on and selecting the icon for the wireless adapter you installed. When prompted, select the name of your network from the list of available networks and type in your password.
