When you undertake your web design it's really important to thing through the site layout. Here are 7 tips that should help you get it right:
Tip 1
Web design means thinking about the screen size of your visitors. Not everyone has a great big monitor. Keep your site width to 1000 pixels maximum width.
Tip 2
Put the content in the middle of the screen or on the left hand side only. Don't try to do fancy stuff. Put it in an easy to view place. Somewhere that won't be affected when the browser window is resized.
Tip 3
Don't let the page length ever exceed two screenfulls of text. This needs to be part of your web design. Visitors would need to be really keen to read more than two screens. Most people don't like reading a lot of text on screen. So look after them and keep is short.
Tip 4
Put the menu on the left-hand side. It's where people expect it. Don't make it difficult for your visitors. Most sites work that way so make it easy for them to know where to look.
Tip 5
Highlight the menu item for the page the user is on. Your web design should make it easy for visitors to know where they are in your site and they'll thank you for it by coming back and browsing all your pages.
Tip 6
Don't fill the margins outside the main text area with images. It looks great but it distracts the visitor from the purpose of the site. Let them focus on what you want them to focus on. Don't give them distractions; your web design should make it easy for them to focus.
Tip 7
Use black and white or strong contrast colours as a key part of your web design. Black and white works well because they are in high contrast to each other. So using them to outline the different areas of the site makes it simpler for the user.
As with all tips you need to adjust them for your site during your web design process. They are however all focused on one thing, your visitor. Make it easy for them and they'll thank you for it. They will want to join your mailing lists and get to know more about you.
