How to Speed My PC Up Easily
Are you frustrated with your PC's performance lately? If you don't have the money for new hardware, here's a simple tip you can use for instant relief.
Typically, when you bring home a computer from the store, it will have preinstalled software and will be using all the preinstalled operating system settings. For most of these OS's today, that can mean rounded window corners, smooth fonts, transparent windows, mouse shadowing, and much more. These features can significantly slow down machines that have smaller CPUs, smaller amounts of memory (RAM), and an overload of programs.
If you're still wondering "how to speed my PC up easily," then here's how you can adjust or turn off those fancy visuals:
Windows 7/Windows Vista
1.) On either your desktop or from the Start menu, right-click on Computer and click on Properties.
2.) In the lower left corner of the screen that pops up, which contains basic info about your PC, click on Performance Information and Tools (for Vista, just click on Performance).
3.) On the next page, click on Adjust visual effects, which is in the upper left hand corner of the window.
4.) When the Performance Options window pops up, you are presented with a list of options. Selecting "Adjust for best performance" will remove all of the fancy visual effects and significantly increase your PC's general operations. For those wishing to keep some of the cool-looking effects, you can pick and choose what you like with the "Custom" option.
5.) When you're done, click OK.
Windows XP
1.) On either your desktop or from the Start menu, right-click on Computer and click on Properties.
2.) In the System Properties window, click on the Advanced tab.
3.) Under Performance, click on Settings. Select "Adjust for best performance" to remove all visual effects or choose "Custom" to compromise between cool effects and performance.
Remember! This is just the tip of the iceberg on how to speed PC up easily. For serious speed increases at the click of a mouse button, go to http://www.squidoo.com/how-to-speed-my-pc-up |
Optimize Your Computer and Save Energy
Energy crisis is getting worse and worse in coming days. We all need to change our habits in order to learn new ways to save energy. I was thinking optimizing our computers to use them more sufficiently then normally we do. Following are few tips which will help you save some energy and ultimately reduce your bills J
Why optimize my computer:
90% of desktop computers are not optimized for energy efficiency. If you optimize your machine, according to Intel, it can save you about 400-kilowatt hours annually.
Optimizing your computer:
Click on "start" menu. Then click on "settings" and then "control panel."
Double click on "power management", under where it says "power schemes," choose "always on" from the drop-down list. Below the "settings for always on power scheme" tab, look for two drop-down lists, labeled "turn off monitor" and "turn off hard disks," respectively.
There are options to select from minutes to hours. set this for 2 minutes or try 15 minutes. Select any according to your needs and requirements.
If you are on Macs. It's more easier to implement these settings. Just go to the Apple pull-down menu, select "system preferences" and then "energy saver." It's all in there.
The new LCD monitors are good for about 100 Kwh per year of electricity savings. Ok, Try to upgrade as you need to replace the old one.
Computer's screen saver programs do not save energy. Unless the screen or backlight on a computer actually turns off, a screen saver uses as much power as word processing. Also, don't forget, you can save additional energy by adjusting your computer's sleep mode to turn on more frequently.
Use the necessary programs only:
Each program is consuming resources from the CPU and the CPU itself consumes energy, for this reason it is advisable to open the programs we are using. Even we can close those programs that are in the systray and run in the background.
By reducing the amount of RAM memory processes and also prevent Windows use virtual memory on your hard disk, which will help us save energy, because the disc has a high consumption
Using Laptops instead of Desktops:
Laptops are generally more environmental friendly than their "big brothers". So if you are planning on getting a new computer you should consider a laptop instead of a desktop computer.
A desktop computer usually uses around 130 watts while a laptop only uses around 15 watts, and sometimes that is with the same tech specs. There are other good features which make them a good choice over desktops like laptops are smaller and use less packaging, meaning less transport and storage space needed. Laptops are available to use during your travel while desktops are waiting back at home.
Remember:
* Remember that the DVD drive, wireless and screen brightness use the most power. Limit their use and you will save a little more power.
* To reduce energy consumption and maximize savings even further, put your laptop's AC adaptor on a power strip that can be turned off when you're not recharging. Otherwise the adaptor will continuously draw power.
* When not using your laptop for a few minutes or put it in Stand By Sleep, and when not have to wear a longer place your laptop in hibernate mode.
* Decrease the consumption of the LCD monitor to adjust the brightness of just what is needed. While the monitor is brighter consume more power.
There is also a relationship between consumption and colors, darker colors use less. If we do not use the entire screen and our desktop is in sight, it is advisable to use a screen or a dark background color black.
With these tips you can save energy. Reducing consumption of your computer/laptop will save you money and enhance the life of your equipment.

Making Your Computer More Energy Efficient
While it is true that computers are not one of the big consumers of electricity in today's home – they consume only a minute amount in comparison to, say, electrically heated water or ovens – they still consume some. Every little bit counts when it comes to saving electricity, so why pay for power (and create a larger carbon footprint and/or more pollution if your local electricity comes from petrol or coal-fired power plants) that you don't actually have to.
These tips should help you feeding your computer more electricity than you have to:
* Shut your computer down overnight. It doesn't need to sit there on standby for eight hours (if you're getting the right amount of sleep) doing nothing. Apparently, this is also good for the system. PCs running Windows Vista need to be shut down and restarted every two or three weeks, while those running earlier versions of Windows need complete shut-down and restarting more often.
* While standby and hibernate modes use some power, they use less than just letting the computer sit there with the screen saver bouncing around the screen. If you're using Windows, you can adjust the power save mode via the Control Panel under the Screen Saver settings. Some keyboards have a helpful little button (with a picture of a crescent moon on it) that you can press to put the computer to sleep instantly – like the spindle does to Sleeping Beauty – without going through 10 minutes of screensaver. Use this button when you know you're going to be away from your computer for an hour or more (if you're going to be away for more than five hours, turn the whole thing off). If you haven't discovered this little setting – a lot of people haven't – then make friends with it next time you get fed up with your current screen saver and want to change it. Or how about doing it right now?
* At home, you don't need to keep the printer on the whole time. Just turn it on when you need it. OK, if you are likely to need it several times in one day, then keep it on. This is particularly true of laser printers, which use a lot of energy to start up. But if you aren't going to need it today, don't even bother turning it on.
Some figures from the USA give an indication of how much power could be saved if everyone followed these simple tips. The UK figures should be similar, although scaled down to suit the population.
* If everyone in the USA shut their computers down overnight, this would save the amount of electricity put out by eight big power stations.
* Using the Power Settings to make the computer go to sleep (hibernate, low power mode, standby mode or sleep mode) can save up to 80% on your current energy usage if you're not currently using them.
* Only 5% of current computer and laptop users have set the power settings to the most efficient mode (US figures).
* Cleaning your computer and home equipment on a regular basis will improve your computer's speed.
Get Rid off Computer Virus
You often find that Hollywood has played a role too for scaring computer users into thinking that at any moment their computer can be taken over. But do not get scared as there are many foolproof ways to keep these unwanted Antiviruses off of your hard drive and the steps to be taken are easy enough for anyone to follow.
Always keep in mind that the only sure protection from these Antiviruses is self-restraint. All these kinds of computer viruses travel by way of disks, Internet downloads and most commonly through e-mail attachments. If you avoid using those disks from friends, avoid downloading any files or avoid opening any attachments, your computer can be kept Antivirus free.
But sometimes you do not accept this option as often you need your files to be shared in that case the software needs to be downloaded. So there are other options, the easiest way to Antivirus awareness is to study how they circulate.
Disk viruses used to be the only thing around. Before your Internet and electronic mail, disk viruses were the only thing around. Though those new disk viruses are rare and the older ones are detected by using an antiviral program. Do you know that the two most common and the two best are MaAffee and Norton Antivirus. Just always try to scan any floppy disk that you are using before you open your files off.
Always keep in mind that Internet downloads are dangerous things these days. But not to worry as simple virus-scanning program can protect against these. Most of these Antivirus programs can be configured to automatically inspect every downloaded file. This particular step is simple and effective. This will also keep your computer safe from a downloaded virus.
Nowadays you often find that E-mail viruses are the most common. It has been discovered by virus writing community that e-mail is an optimal transferring platform. These e-mail Antiviruses do affect on computer very fast which can crash your computer in minutes.
Mainly these type of viruses attack when a normal innocent e-mail attachment is opened. Now if you really want to know the easiest way to protect yourself from these viruses is to scan e-mail attachments before you run them. Always try to remember that the best thing to remember is if you do not know what it is, or who it is from, do not open it. Just keep in mind that the best method of Antivirus protection is prevention. Try not to open unknown files, attachments, etc. always remember to scan everything just to be on the safe side, it does not take long and will also save a lot of time. Antiviruses do not spread easily especially when everyone takes the time to take precautions. This will also speed up your PC Performance.
