Finding the Supply For Your Website Topic

If you have a wonderful website idea, it is important to determine exactly how many other websites are out there on this topic. To do this, we need to check the supply (i.e. the number of webpages on the internet that already talk about this specific topic). Of course, if we find that there is 100 million sites about learning how to knit, we need to go back to square one and find a new topic.

To find this information, all we need is Google.com. Visit this site and type in our term from the example: Learn to Knit. Now you look at the blue bar towards the top right of the page, where it says "Showing results 1 - 10 of 931,000". This means that there is only 931,000 web pages on this term. It may seem like a lot, but this is pretty good. Because in reality, only a handful per million are quality sites. I have confidence that our knitting site can easily beat the others.

Repeat this process with our other term that we thought might work: Beginners Knitting. We see that this one only has 680,000 pages. Even better. With a little practice, you will naturally be able to judge whether or not the supply / demand ratio is in your favor. If there are 1,000 searches and 100,000,000 pages about this topic, that's not very good. But if there are 50,000 searches and 50,000 results, that is fantastic.

Again, spend a few minutes getting familiar with how to do this. Try some random searches and see how many results show up. Try "Real Estate", "Apple", your own name, or some obscure term and see how many/few results there are.

Note: Don't be shocked if there are millions of results. Google is scanning the entire internet for any page that contains your term, so obviously this is going to be a big number. However, only a fraction of these are quality sites dedicated to the topic. Those are the only ones you need to worry about.

Another Note: If the numbers you see are different than mine, don't be shocked. Google is always updating the number of results. So when I see 931,000 you may see more or less depending on the point in time.

Using a Sitemap As a Guide to Building a Website

Navigation

Having a sitemap will help visitors of your website be able to easily navigate it. Website visitors often get frustrated when they can't easily find the pages they are looking for.

If a website has a sitemap, visitors can easily look at it and find the page they need to be on. A website that is easy to navigate will have many more visitors than a site that is hard to navigate.

Website theme

Having a sitemap allows visitors, to easily understand the theme of the website. Wasting time reading through an entire site just to understand the website's main purpose is something that often upsets the visitors.

Since visitors will be able to understand the theme of the website by reading the sitemap, they won't need to waste time going through the whole site in order to understand it's main purpose.

Optimization

Another reason using a site map is that it increases site optimization. It doesn't matter how good a website is if it can't easily be found. A site map contains links to every page on a website.

This means that when a search engine hits a sitemap each page on the site will get indexed by the search engine. This is why it is important to have the sitemap link on the front page of a website.

Organization

A sitemap will make a website more organized. Website owners are often frustrated when they need to update their websites or add new information to their websites.

A sitemap not only gives visitors of the website an overall view of the site, it also gives it to owners. This will make it very easy for the website owner to change content or add new sections to the website. The map will also allow a website owner to have everything on the website organized in a relevant order.

These are just a few of the reasons why a sitemap is important for website owners. Anyone, who wants to have a large or small should consider using a sitemap.

How to Create a Site - Step by Step

Domain - Every website needs a domain name. Grabbing yourself a catchy domain name that properly brands your business is something of an art form. You'll want to try and step into your customer's shoes and view your business the way you'd want an ideal customer to view it. What web address would they imagine your business having? Would they want to type in a long domain or a short domain. Would they like that you're a.org or would they expect to see a.com at the end of your address? Would they remember your domain name? Could you see them telling a friend about your site and being able to pronounce your domain? These are all great questions to ask yourself when selecting your domain name.

Hosting - Now that you've chosen your domain name and purchased it, you'll need a place to put it. It won't show anything but a parked page if you don't direct the domain to your website. Many great web hosts exist that can give you reliable hosting for less than $10 a month. You'll also be able to host as many websites as you want from one of these accounts. Two places that I recommend are Dreamhost and Hostgator. Once you get your hosting set up, be sure to change the DNS at your domain registrar to your new hosting company. Consult the support center at your hosting company for help with changing the DNS.

Type of Site - Now you have to determine what type of site you will have. Many websites can be handled by installing Wordpress to your site. Your hosting company will likely give you the ability to install Wordpress onto your site with a few clicks. Once you have it installed you can add all sorts of functions to it to get it to do what you want it to do. Just search for what you want your site to do and add the term Wordpress to your search. For example "auction site wordpress" or "classified ads wordpress" or "directory site wordpress" These search results will put you on the right path to getting your site the way you want it.

Content - Once you have your domain, your hosting, and a site management software installed, your new site should be live and online. Once you visit it you'll notice that it looks a little bare. You'll have to start adding content to it to make it a fully functional site. If you're making a video site, you'll want to add some videos. If you're running a blog, you'll want to add some posts. If you're running a dating site, you'll want to ask a few single friends to sign up and make a profile.

That's it, four easy steps to having your very own website ready to go!
